RawPrune 1.0.1: prune the RAW, keep the shot

Shooting JPEG+RAW doubles the storage cost of every frame, and the second copy is only worth its space for the shots you actually edit. For everything else the RAW file sits in the library for years and is never opened once. On a library that spans a decade this is the single largest recoverable block of storage, on the Mac and in iCloud both.

Deleting RAW files in bulk is easy to do and easy to regret. RawPrune 1.0.1 exists to make the operation reversible enough to be worth starting.

What it does

RawPrune scans the Photos library for JPEG+RAW pairs, filtered by capture date and favorite status so the set under review is exactly the set you intend. Favorites keep a full-quality replacement and their RAW is backed up. Every other pair is replaced by a single downscaled copy, HEIC by default, JPEG if you prefer it. That split is where the savings come from: full quality is preserved precisely where it can still be used.

One decision is worth stating plainly, because it is the reason the results are trustworthy. RawPrune renders nothing itself. Photos performs the export, and RawPrune backs up the originals and swaps the exported file back in verbatim. An image processing pipeline of my own would be one more thing that can silently degrade a photo, and there is no version of this tool where that is an acceptable risk.

Before anything is replaced, the originals, RAW included, are copied to a backup folder you choose, with a JSON sidecar recording exactly what happened to each pair. Capture date, location, the favorite flag, and album membership all carry over to the replacement. Replacements are staged atomically and the replaced items go to Recently Deleted. If a run is interrupted, RawPrune offers to finish the cleanup on the next launch rather than leaving the library in a partial state.

What it does not do

It does not upload anything, does not require an account, and does not process anything off the device. Scanning runs off the main thread and can be cancelled at any point.

RawPrune 1.0.1 is available for macOS.
